I grew up in northern Iowa but moved to Kansas City about 5 years ago. I love this city and exploring new areas here! There is so much to do, see, and taste from parks to BBQ to national landmarks. When it comes to staying fit, especially in the summer, it’s important to think outside the box… or gym. An air-conditioned gym may be nice for an afternoon break from the heat, but here are some local ideas to keep your whole family fit and healthy in KC while enjoying the great outdoors.
Picnic in the park.
Check out a local park for some fun, outdoor activities such as a healthy picnic, disc golf or just walking/running on a trail. Indian Creek Trail is extensive and scenic for bikers, walkers and runners. A family bike ride might be a fun idea. There are challenging disc golf courses at Swope Park and Shawnee Mission Park. You only need a few discs to start a game. When you’re ready for a snack or maybe dinner, pack a picnic and take a break on the grass or shelter house. Consider packing apples and peanut butter, fresh watermelon, berries, or turkey and cheese sandwiches on sprouted grain bread with veggies.
Cool off in a pool.
Swimming is another great activity to beat the heat. There are so many pools in the KC area. You are typically eligible for a discounted admission if you are a resident of the county of the pool. Swimming is a low-impact way to get your heart rate up and stay cool at the same time. Throwing some dive sticks, making an obstacle course, or tossing a ball are ways to pass the time and exercise at the same time.
Become a tourist.
The National WWI monument, Liberty Memorial, is a hot tourist spot, but did you know that you can get a great work out there too? There are stairs all around the memorial that are great for walking or running. There is also a paved running trail around the outskirts. Stairs are a good way to get your heart rate up and strengthen your legs and glutes. If you’re feeling up for a full body workout, try adding 15 push-ups on the grass and 15 tricep dips on the picnic tables. This is one of my favorite spots in KC, and the view on top is worth the stairs to get there!
Go to the market.
Finally, for some healthy goodies, check out the City Market in River Market district on a Saturday morning. Park a little farther away and walk there. Pick up a bundle of fresh fruits and veggies, a loaf of homemade bread, and a pound or two of organic meat. These items are usually very reasonably priced, high quality, and taste fresher and crisper than store-bought versions. Eat up!
Whatever you do, stay well hydrated with water and listen to your body. If you start to feel light-headed or dizzy, it might mean you are pushing your body too hard. Remember to take a break in the shade or indoors. Check out a new spot this weekend and try something different while being in the great city you call home. Think outside the box to stay fit this summer.
