I’ve began using the workout facility at my apartment these last few days just as a change in venue for my personal routines, and I noticed something about one of the regulars in the gym — he’s always working his arms.

Will an approach like that give you results in one particular area?  Yes, but it’s ill-advised.  Think of your muscle groups in the same way that you’d think of any machine; they can be overworked.  You wouldn’t always drive your car at 100 MPH for hours on end because you know it would overheat at some point – muscles can work in the same way.  If you only focus on one muscle group contstantly:

  • You deny your muscles a chance to recoup to a 100% state.
  • You put yourself through potentially avoidable soreness/pain.
  • You increase the chance of bad form (sloppiness), which increases the chance of injury.

In my opinion you’d ideally want to “balance” your workouts.  When I use the term “balance” in this sense, I’m simply saying that when you plan a routine you should ask yourself if you’re working each muscle group in sections and staying on top of cardio and flexibility?  Endurance.  Strength.  Flexibility.

Endurance Strength Flexibility

Pushing for these pillars of fitness creates a balanced workout...

Rather than working your arms 5 days a week (like I’ve seen the gentleman in the gym do), why not focus on arms one day, legs the next, back and abs one day, and so on.  I also like to sprinkle in a jog each day with some other stamina-pushing routines on other days.  And Yoga will always be your friend when it comes to flexibility :-)

Your body will thank you if you’re giving muscle groups time to restore themselves between exercise periods, and you’ll see better results as you workout.  You’ll feel better too.

Are you balancing your routine?  If you need any help doing so, or would just like an outside opinion on the matter – feel free to contact us using the form in the upper-right portion of this web page.

Thanks for reading – now enjoy your day!
